School of Art
The Place for Art, Technology and Theory
At the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art, students begin by asking bold questions. Here, artists challenge norms, cross disciplines and experiment with new approaches, grounded in conceptual thinking and the resources of a top-ranked research university. With only 50 undergraduate and six graduate students each year, the school fosters an intimate community where internationally recognized faculty challenge and support students to expand their thinking as artists.
Artmaking as a Vital Intellectual Pursuit
Art at CMU is a way of engaging with the world. The graduate program’s unique three-year structure is designed to provide the time and resources for in-depth multidisciplinary research. Undergraduate students choose between two degree programs, each designed to support individual paths while building fluency in traditional media, critical studies and emerging technologies. Peer and faculty feedback, hands-on studio exploration and 24-hour studio access empower students to deeply explore their artistic practices.
Cutting-Edge Resources
The School of Art spans more than 50,000 square feet of studios, classrooms and state-of-the-art facilities. Whether students are casting metal, building circuits, editing video or printing photographs, our spaces are designed for making, experimenting and pushing boundaries. Across campus, the school offers multiple venues to exhibit, perform and test ideas in public, giving students the freedom to develop ideas in whatever form they take.
