The Center for the Arts in Society is a collaborative effort of scholars and artists affiliated with the College of Fine Arts and the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Center aims to explore the role of the arts in society--the place and impact of the arts both in the workings of social power and in processes of social change.  At the same time, it is dedicated to the exploration of the place of society in the arts--the ways in which diverse forms of social and political engagement have shaped the history of the arts, and might drive their transformation in the future. 

Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics

The Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics (CBPD) conducts research, demonstrations and teaching in building performance and diagnostics. In conjunction with ABSIC, the industry-government-university consortium established in 1988, the CBPD is engaged in groundbreaking work that investigates the impact of advanced technology on the physical, environmental and social settings in office buildings.  One major effort of the ABSIC consortium is the construction of the 7000-square foot Intelligent Workplace, a living laboratory of office environments and innovations.  Please visit the CBPD's Website for more information.

Center for Iranian Music

Established in February 2013, the Center for Iranian Music (CFIM) aims to “create opportunities that support and promote the appreciation of Iranian music and its rich history,” according to Reza Vali, associate professor of composition at the School of Music and director of education and research for the center. Vali and Dr. Bijan Elyaderani founded the center to preserve and promote Iranian music, including traditional music (the Datsgâh System), folk music (regional music of Iran), contemporary music, and commemorative and religious music. The CFIM’s other goals include:

  • Establishing Iranian music courses;
  • Increasing university and local community awareness of Iranian music through lectures and performances;
  • Preservation and propagation of Iranian music; and
  • Recognizing and supporting masters of Iranian traditional and contemporary music.

Remaking Cities Institute

The Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) is an urban design research center based in the School of Architecture. Our mission is to promote an improved quality of life in cities and towns through academic, applied and action research into place-making and community redevelopment. The RCI expands the regional and global impact of the School of Architecture's Urban Laboratory studio and Master of Urban Design (MUD) program by fostering multi-sectorial collaboration between faculty, researchers, professionals and community organizations. Through our education and outreach programs, we contribute to the growing dialogue on urban design and planning in the Pittsburgh region, and to the diversification of the field of urban design.
